The passengers initially set out from Tahoe City in the morning and later picked up additional passengers at a marina. Weather conditions deteriorated with strong winds and high waves. Despite the brave efforts of some passengers and a passing hiker who assisted in rescue efforts, the accident had a devastating outcome.
