NTSB issues new footage of fatal DC plane incident

The National Transportation Safety Board has released new surveillance video of the tragic midair collision over Washington, D.C. that claimed the lives of 67 individuals in January. During a three-day hearing, NTSB board members examined the footage to investigate the causes of the crash between an American Airlines passenger jet and a military Black Hawk helicopter. Analysis of the video showed the helicopter flying above the altitude limit before colliding with the plane. Flight data recorder readings revealed discrepancies in the helicopter's altitude information. Further investigations revealed that similar discrepancies were found in tests conducted on other helicopters from the same unit flying in the same area. At the hearing, families of the victims were emotional as they watched the surveillance footage of the collision. The investigation also uncovered that the FAA failed to address numerous near misses around Reagan Airport in the lead-up to the tragedy and that Army helicopters frequently operated around Washington, D.C., with critical locating equipment turned off.
