NTSB: Ex-Senator's Conduct Probable Cause of Deadly Airplane Accident

A recent report by the National Transportation Safety Board has found that a choice made by former Mississippi state Senator Johnny Morgan is believed to have been a key factor in the fatal 2023 plane crash that claimed his life. The report states that Morgan, aged 76, was alone when his aircraft, a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air E90, crashed near Winslow, Arkansas on May 17, 2023, after departing from University–Oxford Airport in Oxford, Mississippi earlier that day. The NTSB highlights that Morgan's decision to fly into adverse weather conditions despite known problems with the autopilot system of the aircraft likely played a role in the crash. The investigation revealed that the plane descended sharply during an instrument approach and ultimately collided with wooded terrain. Johnny Morgan had previously served in the Mississippi State Senate from 1981 to 1991.
