North Carolina man pleads guilty in fatal semi truck crash
A man from North Carolina, Melvin Battle, has recently made an Alford plea in connection with a fatal incident that occurred in Springfield, Missouri. This plea means that while the defendant does not admit guilt, he accepts that the evidence against him could lead to a conviction. According to court documents, Battle was involved in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The incident took place on September 29, 2023, when a witness saw a tractor-trailer hit something near Walmart on N. Kansas Expressway. The victim passed away on October 1, 2023, due to injuries sustained in the accident. Battle initially denied involvement in the crash but was later identified as the driver of the semi through an investigation conducted by the Springfield Police Department. Battle is set to be sentenced on January 14, 2026.
