No drugs or alcohol detected in arrested driver from fatal I-35 crash
The attorney for the truck driver involved in the fatal 18-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 in north Austin has stated that the driver did not have drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, according to a toxicology report. The driver, Solomun Weldekeal Araya, faces charges of intoxication manslaughter and assault related to the incident which resulted in five deaths and 11 injuries near Parmer and Howard Lane on March 13. The attorney has moved to reduce Araya's bond and a hearing may take place next week. The Austin Police Department is examining the toxicology reports in collaboration with the district attorney's office to determine the appropriate charges, as the investigation is ongoing. The crash involved a total of 18 vehicles, including various trucks and cars, occurring in a construction zone. Multiple lawsuits have been filed by victims of the crash, naming the truck driver, the trucking carrier, the construction company, and Amazon, though Amazon clarified that the driver was not their employee but was hauling an Amazon load. Amazon expressed condolences for the tragic event and stated their cooperation with the investigations in light of the ongoing situation.
