Nichushkin involved in car crash before game, benched as precaution in 5-2 victory against Capitals.
Valeri Nichushkin, a forward for the Colorado Avalanche, was in a car accident on his way to the game on Monday. As a precaution, he did not play in the Avalanche's 5-2 win over Washington. Coach Jared Bednar confirmed that Nichushkin suffered minor injuries but was overall okay. Due to the accident, Nichushkin was not able to participate in the game. Bednar mentioned that the roads were icy due to snowfall, causing a multi-vehicle fender bender. Nichushkin has had injury troubles before this season and has been a key player for the Avalanche. Colorado called up Alex Barré-Boulet as a replacement, and he contributed an assist in the game. The Avalanche, who have the best record in the NHL, were led by Nathan MacKinnon's scoring performance in the game against Washington. MacKinnon notched two goals, reaching 38 goals for the season and also earned his 1,100th career point.
