New video shows driver taking wrong turn on Route 1 before fatal crash with Trooper Kevin Trainor

New surveillance video shows a wrong-way driver moments before a deadly Route 1 crash in Peabody that killed Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor and Hernan Marrero early Wednesday morning. The video shows a Jeep Wrangler being driven by Marrero entering a jug handle around 2 a.m. Instead of crossing all lanes of traffic to the other side as intended, the driver appears to turn back the way he came. The footage shows the car pulling into the jug handle on Route 1 North, waiting at a red light for a few seconds, and then making a sharp left turn into oncoming traffic, heading south in the northbound lanes. Another car traveling in the correct direction still had a green light at the time. Moments later, surveillance video captures the Jeep traveling from right to left on the screen in the foreground, which is the correct direction for that side of the road. Additional footage from Kelly Jeep’s cameras near the Lynnfield Tunnel shows the Jeep Wrangler emerging from the tunnel on the right but driving in the wrong direction. State police said Marrero then crashed head-on into Trainor. Trainor, who was heading home from his shift but responded to the call about the wrong-way driver, died at the hospital. Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene.
