New regulations on non-citizen truck drivers after deadly Florida crash

The Transportation Department will be implementing stricter requirements for noncitizens to obtain commercial driver's licenses following three fatal crashes this year involving immigrant truck drivers who should not have received licenses. The new regulations will make it much more difficult for immigrants to obtain commercial licenses, as only specific classes of visa holders will be eligible. States will now need to verify an applicant's immigration status in a federal database, and these licenses will only be valid for up to one year, or until the applicant's visa expires, whichever comes first. An audit revealed numerous improperly issued licenses in several states, prompting Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to threaten funding cuts for California due to violations related to license issuance. All states must pause issuing commercial driver's licenses to noncitizens until they can comply with the new rules, which will only allow drivers with specific visas to qualify for these licenses. Duffy emphasizes that the new rules aim to ensure the qualifications and authorization of individuals obtaining commercial driver's licenses.
