New information on US-460 tractor-trailer crash and Mass Casualty Incident
Latest Update: The Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department has provided more details about the recent incident that resulted in the closure of all westbound lanes on US-460. Fire officials reported that at approximately 4:30 PM, they were dispatched, alongside the Appomattox County Rescue Squad, to a multi-vehicle collision involving a school bus and a tractor-trailer. Upon arrival, emergency crews encountered a school bus and a tractor-trailer with significant damage blocking the roadway, as well as an overturned pickup truck with occupants trapped inside. Five patients in need of immediate transportation were identified at the scene, while an additional six students from the school bus were assessed by medical staff and later taken by their parents for further evaluation. Due to the severity of injuries, the incident was categorized as a Mass Casualty Incident. Fire and EMS personnel promptly commenced triage and treatment procedures while focusing on extricating the individuals trapped in the pickup. As the condition of three patients deteriorated, three medevac helicopters were summoned to transport them. Appomattox Engine 2 facilitated a landing zone at the Rescue Squad building, while Pamplin Volunteer Fire Department established two additional landing zones at the accident site. The affected roadway has now been reopened for normal traffic flow, with no additional injuries reported. Residents in the Appomattox, Virginia area are advised of detours in place following the tractor-trailer crash along US-460. Traffic diversions are guiding vehicles from the affected section onto Route 633, then Route 705, then Route 632, before rejoining westbound 460.
