New Details on Fatal I-35 Multi-Vehicle Crash

New information about the fatal multi-vehicle collision in North Austin on Thursday night has emerged from court documents. The crash involved 18 vehicles, including a semi-truck, and resulted in five fatalities and 11 individuals being hospitalized. Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, has been arrested and charged with five counts of intoxicated manslaughter and two counts of intoxicated assault in connection to the incident. Witnesses reported that a yellow truck towing a semi-trailer with an Amazon logo failed to slow down and collided with numerous vehicles, causing a chain reaction crash over a distance of about 500 feet. The impact caused extensive damage, resulting in several deaths and severe injuries. Authorities determined that the driver, Araya, showed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. The crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, with a preliminary report expected to be released online within a month and a final report within 12 to 24 months.
