New details in fatal solo-vehicle crash on I-5 in Stanislaus County
(FOX40.COM) — The California Highway Patrol released new details in Saturday's solo-vehicle crash that left one person dead and another hospitalized in Newman. CHP said officers responded to reports of a crash around 10:40 a.m. southbound on Interstate 5, north of Stuhr Road and arrived to find a Ford overturned and on its roof. The investigation determined that the driver was traveling on northbound I-5 when he turned left into the center median for an unknown reason and lost control of the car. The vehicle then overturned, crossing onto the southbound lanes before resting on its roof. The driver, identified as a 30-year-old man from Van Nuys, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to CHP, the passenger, a 32-year-old woman from Van Nuys, was extricated from the car and taken to the hospital in a helicopter with major injuries. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts and it is currently unknown if mind-altering substances were a factor in the crash, CHP said.
