Negligence blamed for fatal plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia
The families of two Mexican nationals who tragically lost their lives in the plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia in January have taken legal action by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the jet company. The lawsuit was initiated in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday on behalf of Raul Meza Arredondo and Lizeth Murillo Osuna, two of the six Mexican citizens who perished in the crash. With a total of eight fatalities and over 20 injuries, the incident occurred when a Learjet 55 crashed at the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue in a heavily populated area of Northeast Philly. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the jet company, Med Jets, asserting that the owner failed to ensure the safety of the aircraft. Attorney Jeffrey P. Goodman, from Saltz Mongeluzzi & Bendesky representing the families, expressed that the lawsuit aims to seek accountability for the tragic accident and bring clarity to unanswered questions about the cause. A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the Learjet 55 departed from Northeast Philadelphia Airport on January 31, destined for Tijuana, Mexico, in a mission to transport Osuna’s daughter for life-saving medical treatment. The report outlined that the cockpit voice recorder was not operational, possibly for several years, hindering investigations into the crash. The lawsuit also referenced a prior fatal incident involving a Med Jets aircraft in Morales, Mexico. As the NTSB continues its investigation, final conclusions are anticipated within the next one to two years. Med Jets has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
