Multiple fatalities reported after head-on collision on I-40 East in Sampson County, troopers say
NEWTON GROVE, N.C. (WNCN) — Interstate 40 has reopened as troopers investigate a crash that has left several dead early Saturday morning in Sampson County. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation notified drivers that I-40 East was closed around 2:45 a.m. due to a crash near exit 343 for U.S. Highway 701. According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers rushed to the highway and located multiple fatalities at the scene. The trooper's preliminary investigation found that a red Chevrolet Camaro was traveling west on I-40 East when it collided head-on with a black Honda Accord. "The occupants of the Camaro, identified as the contributing vehicle, were pronounced deceased at the scene," the trooper said in a briefing to the media. "We are currently working to identify the deceased occupants of the Camaro and to gather additional information regarding the deceased passenger in the Honda Accord." The trooper said the driver of the Honda was seriously injured and airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. The other occupant of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. A stretch of I-40 East was shut down from the time of the crash until around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to NCDOT.
