MSP probes crash that killed man and 2 girls

Maryland State Police are presently investigating a tragic car accident where a man and two young girls lost their lives on Saturday evening. The collision occurred on Interstate 695 at the ramp to I-83 southbound after law enforcement had tried to stop the Jeep Wrangler. The police officer had attempted to pull the vehicle over at Greenspring Avenue, but the car fled. The officer then turned off their emergency lights, reentered traffic, and refrained from pursuing the car, which was part of the Maryland State Police Traffic Incident Management Division. The officer approached the vehicle but it sped away, prompting the officer to return to their vehicle and deactivate their lights. While on patrol, the officer spotted the Jeep Wrangler on a grassy area of the I-695 ramp to southbound I-83, fully engulfed in flames. Authorities stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to it striking an embankment and a tree before catching on fire, resulting in the fatalities of the driver, a 36-year-old man, and the two 9-year-old girls. Despite attempting to extinguish the fire, the officer was unable to do so. The State Police emphasized that engaging in a vehicle pursuit can endanger the public and personnel, and the decision to initiate a pursuit lies with the pursuing trooper and duty officer, requiring an imminent danger to the public. The rationale behind the trooper's choice to not pursue the vehicle is currently being investigated.
