MRI Accident: Metal Chain-Wearing Man Critically Injured on Long Island
A man aged 61 was severely injured in a serious incident involving a metal chain and an MRI machine in Long Island. The event took place at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, as reported by the Nassau County Police Department. Against the technician's advice, the man entered the MRI room to help a patient, resulting in the chain around his neck pulling him into the machine, causing a medical emergency. He was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. Witnesses observed smoke emerging from the building, prompting concerns from bystanders in the area. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. Melonie Longacre, VP of Operations at Northwell Health, highlighted the importance of following MRI safety procedures, particularly the multizone protocol. She explained the various zones and the powerful magnet used in these machines. The MRI department at Northwell ensures rigorous training for employees to maintain safety standards around the magnet. The victim has not been identified, and Nassau Open MRI has not responded to requests for comment from FOX 5 NY.
