Motorcyclist injured in St. Paul crash on I-94; bike crosses median, hurts driver, state patrol reports

A motorcyclist was injured in a collision late Tuesday night on Interstate 94 in St. Paul, resulting in their bike flying over the median and hitting a motorist traveling in the opposite direction. The incident, which occurred around 10 p.m., began in the eastbound lanes near Prior Avenue. After being thrown from the bike, the motorcyclist's vehicle flew over the concrete barrier into the westbound lanes, hitting another vehicle. The motorcyclist sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Regions Hospital, while the motorist struck by the flying bike suffered minor injuries and was transported to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. The accident caused a temporary closure of both sides of the interstate for less than an hour while the Minnesota State Patrol investigates. This crash took place on the same day a new state law allowing motorcyclists to practice lane splitting and filtering in specific scenarios went into effect. Lane splitting refers to a motorcyclist passing a vehicle in the same lane and direction, permitted at speeds under 25 mph by the new law. Lane filtering is when a motorcyclist goes between lanes of stationary traffic, with a speed limit set at 15 mph above the traffic flow. Motorists who obstruct a motorcyclist's legal right to split or filter lanes may face a misdemeanor charge. It remains unknown whether the motorcyclist was engaged in either of these maneuvers during the crash on Tuesday.
