Mother speaks following daughter's injury in GR Civic Theatre bus accident
A charter bus accident involving the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre left four high school students injured on Saturday morning. The bus went off the highway and hit a guardrail, resulting in one student still in critical condition, while the other three have been discharged from the hospital. One of the students, 16-year-old Makayla DePriest, was among those hospitalized. Her mother, Kailey DePriest, received a Life360 alert about the crash minutes after texting with her daughter. Makayla, who had brain surgery in June for chronic Hydrocephalus, sustained a concussion from the accident, experiencing severe headache, dizziness, and nausea. Despite her own challenges post-surgery, Makayla is more concerned about her friends. The students were on their way to Oberlin College when the crash occurred, and DePriest is grateful for the staff members who ensured the students' safety. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and a GoFundMe has been set up to aid Makayla's recovery. Moreover, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is hosting a card-making event this Wednesday to show support for Makayla and the other student still hospitalized.
