Mother, infant hospitalized after ATV rollover accident

WARNER VALLEY, Utah (ABC4) — A mother and an approximately one-year-old infant were hospitalized after an ATV rollover accident in the Warner valley area. According to Washington County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred just after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sgt Lucas Alfred with the Washington County Sheriff's Office said that there was a 9-1-1 hangup call police went to investigate. Later, they got another call from the ATV rental area. When they arrived on scene, they found that 5 occupants were in a 4-person ATV and had rolled over. The occupants were able to get the vehicle back up onto its wheels and wheel it back to the rental area. The driver and two juveniles were reportedly buckled up in the back seat of the ATV with safety gear appropriate for their age. The passenger of the vehicle, a woman, reportedly had her one-year-old infant strapped to her chest, according to Alfred. When the vehicle rolled over, the woman reportedly sustained "possible serious injuries to her hips and pelvis." The infant was also transported to the hospital to be evaluated for injuries, though no injuries were overtly apparent at the time of the rollover. "The biggest concern with this is that she had an infant strapped to her chest and not buckled into a safety device," said Sgt. Alfred. "This could have been much worse." Alfred emphasized the importance of calling 9-1-1 when in an accident and letting first responders come to you. "Stay on the line, speak with the dispatchers, and let responders come out to you," he said. "Furthering travel, when you have a serious injury, could aggravate that injury and could make things worse. You're usually better off staying where you are."
