Mother in Miami Gardens charged after 2-year-old son shoots himself; great-grandmother describes it as a "tragic accident"

A 33-year-old mother is in legal trouble after her 2-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the leg with a gun taken from her purse, according to Miami Gardens police. The child's great-grandmother, Paula Campbell-Stone, expressed gratitude that the incident was not more severe and believes it was an unfortunate accident. She stated that the mother has always been good to her children and may not have realized the danger of leaving the gun accessible to the child. Campbell-Stone also mentioned her surprise that a 2-year-old could manage to pull the trigger. The mother is now facing charges of child neglect and culpable negligence and has been granted supervised visits with her children while an investigation is ongoing by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Both a judge and the mother's attorney stressed the importance of securely storing firearms to prevent such incidents, and the attorney emphasized that his client has no prior criminal record and is a lawful gun owner who made a regrettable mistake.
