Monkeys carrying disease flee after accident in Jasper County

In Jasper County, Mississippi, a recent incident occurred where a truck transporting 21 monkeys to a research facility in Florida had an accident causing it to overturn. The event took place near Heidelberg on Interstate 59, leading to six Rhesus monkeys escaping. These monkeys were carriers of hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19. Unfortunately, five out of the six escaped monkeys had to be euthanized. To manage the situation, authorities are working with an animal disposal company, and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is involved in the response efforts. In light of one monkey still being unaccounted for, residents are advised not to approach the animal but instead contact 911 if spotted. Tulane University has been informed about the incident and will arrange for a team to collect the remaining monkeys on October 29, 2025.
