
Middle school student killed, girl seriously injured in rollover crash in Bedford, police say
A Manchester middle school student was killed in a rollover crash while driving a stolen car early Wednesday morning in Bedford, police said.Police said a car rolled over around 1:50 a.m., and the driver, a male juvenile, died at a hospital. A girl who was also in the car suffered serious injuries, according to police.The ages and identities of the juveniles have not been released, but the boy who was killed was a student at Southside Middle School in Manchester, officials said.Manchester police said that about an hour before the crash, the car had been reported stolen by a food delivery driver, who said he had briefly left the car unattended on Clifford Avenue.>> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play <<Police said they spotted the car in the area of Kenberma Street operating without its headlights on. Police said the car accelerated away when the cruiser's lights and sirens were activated, and the officer decided to end the chase after losing sight of the vehicle when it continued onto the highway.New Hampshire State Police discovered the overturned car off Route 101 in Bedford.A man who lives behind the sound barrier by the exit said he and his girlfriend heard the crash and then screaming coming from the female passenger. He said he ran out to a fire lane behind the house and yelled at the girl to keep screaming until he could find her. The couple brought the girl to their apartment and called an ambulance. They said the girl said she was kidnapped and seemed confused, at first saying she was 13 and then 16. Manchester Superintendent Jennifer Chmiel released a statement about the crash on behalf of the school district:"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students, and our thoughts are with those impacted by this motor vehicle accident. In addition to our school based counseling teams, we have brought in additional community resources and grief counselors that will be available at the school."We encourage parents and students to reach out to a member of the Southside team if you have any questions or would like to access these resources.
