Medical professional sues Santa Monica and Los Angeles County following life-threatening accident.

A lawsuit has been filed by a doctor against the city of Santa Monica and Los Angeles County following a severe accident that occurred last year that left him with significant injuries. On November 8, 2024, Dr. Brandon Ishaque was struck by a car while crossing the street at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and 10th Street, resulting in life-altering injuries. The lawsuit, brought by Ishaque and his attorney Shant Karnikian, alleges negligence on the part of Santa Monica for not addressing three previous reports regarding broken warning lights at the crosswalk prior to the accident. Ishaque suffered fractures to his leg, hip bone, scapula, lung injuries, artery damage in his neck, and a shattered kidney due to the crash. He and Karnikian emphasize that this legal action is not solely about the damages incurred by Ishaque, but also aims to prevent similar incidents and ensure safety measures are in place. Although CBS LA could not obtain comments from city officials, Santa Monica's "Vision Zero" initiative prioritizes Wilshire Boulevard for preventing fatal and severe injury crashes, and warning lights have been installed at the intersection in response. However, Ishaque points out that these measures may not be sufficient if they are not functioning properly. Prior to the crash, Ishaque recalls an elderly lady mentioning that she had been hit at the same intersection, indicating a recurrent safety concern.
