Medical helicopter crashes in numbers
Investigators are currently examining the cause of the recent medical helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento. Three individuals aboard the helicopter were critically injured and taken to UC Davis Medical Center. KCRA 3 Investigates conducted an analysis of reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to investigate the frequency of accidents involving the company, REACH Air Medical Services, as well as air medical helicopter crashes nationwide. REACH Air Medical Services, established in 1987, operates in multiple states with a total of 30 bases. Over the past 10 years, REACH has experienced two incidents: one in 2015 in Apple Valley, California, involving a tail rotor issue, and another in 2022 near Yuba City due to a bird strike. The cause of the Sacramento crash from Monday night is still unknown. The report highlighted that while the number of crashes for air medical helicopters is decreasing, further research is needed to enhance safety measures.
