MDOT to construct pedestrian islands on MLK Blvd to curb speeding post fatal collision

Construction is set to start in June on a new project designed to reduce speeding and enhance safety along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lansing, following a fatal accident that took place in April. Work is about to commence on the installation of four pedestrian refuge islands in southside Lansing next week, arriving after a tragic multi-vehicle crash resulted in one death and 12 injuries over a month ago. The Michigan Department of Transportation will construct the islands along MLK Boulevard between Victor Avenue and Cavanaugh Road. The project, costing $250,000, is anticipated to begin on June 9 and be completed by August 1, generating four jobs in the process. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address traffic issues in the area, with further action being planned. An MDOT representative expressed optimism about the impact of the project, emphasizing the importance of taking these preliminary steps toward traffic calming.
