Mayor identifies officer who died in 2-car collision

The city of Chowchilla in California has revealed that Ray Barrantes, an on-duty police officer, tragically lost his life in a collision on Friday night involving his patrol vehicle and a big rig. The incident occurred at the intersection of Road 13 in Madera County when Officer Barrantes' marked Ford Explorer collided with a Freightliner crossing State Route 152. The collision, reported around 10:30 p.m., resulted in Officer Barrantes crashing with the right side of the double-filled truck's trailer, leading to his unfortunate death at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was unharmed, and neither drugs nor alcohol seem to have been involved. Mayor Kelly Smith has ordered that flags at city facilities be flown at half-staff until October 12, 2025, in tribute to Officer Barrantes. The community is encouraged to participate in this show of respect to honor Officer Barrantes and his family.
