Maryland bill would ban driving with snow and ice on vehicle
A bill proposed in Maryland aims to ban driving with snow and ice on vehicles. If enacted, House Bill 474, introduced by Del. Edith Patterson, would impose fines ranging from $25 to $200 on drivers whose snow-covered vehicles cause accidents or harm on the road. Patterson highlighted that existing accident reporting often focuses solely on road conditions, overlooking the condition of moving vehicles. Co-sponsor of the bill, Del. Veronica Turner, emphasized the safety implications of the legislation, likening it to the push for helmet use when riding motorcycles. While the bill is still in progress, Scott Hurst of the Susquehanna Hose Company urges defensive driving practices to prevent issues. If approved, the law is slated to take effect on October 1, 2026. A recent incident in Harford County, where a large chunk of ice struck a car on I-95, injuring two individuals, underscores the dangers of driving with snow and ice accumulation. To avoid such incidents, drivers are advised to thoroughly clear their vehicles of snow and ice before hitting the road.
