Man taken into custody for driving without a license following deadly accident: Polk authorities

The Polk County Sheriff's Office announced that they have apprehended a man for driving without a license following a tragic car accident. The incident occurred on July 22 on Snell Creek Road involving a Ford F250 and a Toyota truck at the intersection. The Toyota, carrying three passengers, ran a stop sign which led to a collision, causing the Toyota to overturn. Tragically, one passenger in the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, another was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The driver and the third passenger sustained minor injuries. The driver of the F250 was also hospitalized. The driver of the Toyota, identified as 45-year-old Billado Mendez, reportedly initially claimed that the deceased passenger was driving. However, evidence confirmed that Mendez was the driver and did not possess a license as he was in the country illegally. Mendez was arrested for driving without a license resulting in a death and for providing false information to law enforcement, both aggravated by his illegal status in the country. Mendez is currently under an ICE hold as the investigation remains ongoing.
