Man sentenced to 10-12 1/2 years for deadly crash and drug offenses in 2020

A Lorain man has been sentenced to serve a decade to twelve-and-a-half years in prison starting in January for causing a fatal traffic accident involving an unborn baby, as well as a drug conviction. Rolland A. Scales, 29, pleaded guilty to several felony and misdemeanor charges in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. The judge, Chris Cook, accepted the plea deal and found Scales guilty of the charges. The maximum sentence for the fatal crash charges was 38 years, while the drug case could have led to 33 years. Scales is required to report to the Lorain County Jail by January 16, 2026. He will likely spend around seven-and-a-half years in prison including time served. Aside from the fatal crash incident, Scales faced other legal issues and had multiple attorneys before choosing to represent himself. The Lorain Police Department will receive most of the money seized from Scales, with a portion going to the Prosecutor's Office trust fund. The crash occurred in August 2020, resulting in the death of an unborn fetus and injuries to the pregnant woman's two sons. Scales fled the crash scene but was eventually captured by the U.S. Marshals Service. The judge denied Scales' attempts to dismiss the charges, and he pleaded guilty to additional crimes in other cases from previous years.
