Man killed in Santa Rosa hit-and-run crash Monday

(KRON) -- A man in a wheelchair crossing a street in Santa Rosa on Monday afternoon was killed after being struck by a lifted pickup truck, according to police. A white lifted GMC pickup truck was being driven eastbound on West College Avenue around 2:52 p.m. when the driver fatally struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross south from Clover Drive, the Santa Rosa Police Department said. Investigators said the pedestrian was crossing the intersection while the truck's driver had stopped for a red light. "He was still attempting to cross the street when the light for eastbound traffic turned green," police wrote. "The driver of the truck began to proceed through the intersection at a slow rate of speed, colliding with the victim in the crosswalk." The driver, later identified as Isreal Ramirez Sanchez, 21, of Santa Rosa, got out of the truck along with his female passenger and approached the victim before getting back into the vehicle and fleeing, according to authorities. The identity of the pedestrian was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin. Police used security camera video and automated license plate readers to identify the suspect vehicle. As officers were on the way to the truck's registered address, a family member of the suspected driver contacted Santa Rosa PD to report that Sanchez was at their residence waiting to surrender to authorities. Sanchez was arrested for felony hit-and-run resulting in death. The female passenger was not arrested based on the initial investigation, police said.
