Man killed, driver charged after crash on North Broadway

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A driver is charged with driving under the influence after a crash on North Broadway left a man dead early Wednesday morning, the Knoxville Police Department said. Around midnight on Wednesday, Knoxville Police responded to the 1700 block of North Broadway after several 911 calls reported a rollover crash. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a black Jeep flipped on it's side and on fire. Based on the preliminary investigation, Knoxville Police said a Kia sedan was attempting to pull left into the Kenjo gas station and drove into the path of the Jeep. The passenger of the jeep, a 22-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. The driver of the jeep, identified as William Gavigan, 22, of Knoxville, showed signs of intoxication, KPD said. A general sessions docket states that Gavigan told officers that he was traveling from his residence in the Fort Sanders neighborhood to Taco Bell. Gavigan was taken to UT Medical Center for treatment and then arrested for driving under the influence. He is also accused of violating the registration law and financial responsibility law, court records state. The driver of the Kia, a 32-year-old man, declined to be taken to an area hospital. Knoxville Police's crash reconstruction investigators are leading the investigation into the crash.
