Man in Canton found after reportedly running away from deadly accident last week

A man from Canton, New York, Herbert Planty, aged 44, was captured by law enforcement after reportedly leaving a fatal accident site a week ago. The New York State Police reported that Planty was found at a home in Potsdam by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department after a joint search effort involving multiple agencies. He was peacefully arrested and taken to the state police station in Canton. Planty faces charges related to the accident where a motorcyclist, James McLean, aged 41, lost his life. After being arraigned in Canton Court, Planty was sent to St. Lawrence County Jail on $20,000 cash bail, $40,000 bond, or a $200,000 partially secured bond. The accident occurred on Stiles Road in Canton, and Planty allegedly fled into the woods after checking on McLean. Assistance in the investigation was provided by various agencies, including the St. Lawrence District Attorney's Office, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Canton Police Department, and Potsdam Police Department.
