Man from Rocky Hill admits guilt following fatal boating accident in Portland in 2022

A man in Rocky Hill, Connecticut pleaded guilty on Tuesday for his involvement in a fatal boat crash in 2022 in Portland. The charges against Kerry Sheltra, 55, include second-degree manslaughter, assault, and risk of injury to a minor, following the incident on July 10, 2022. Sheltra is expected to be sentenced to a three-year term, suspended after serving 90 days. It was discovered during investigation that a Yamaha jet boat was traveling on the Connecticut River when it abruptly veered towards the shore, leading to a collision with rocks. The crash resulted in the ejection of five individuals on board, including the death of Wayne Hamler, 60, from Waterford, who was seated towards the front of the boat. Sheltra, who had consumed four drinks before the crash, admitted to investigators that he had alcohol in his system at the time of the incident. Further details from the investigation revealed multiple open and empty drink containers on the boat. Sheltra’s alcohol consumption was evident from his physical appearance as reported by an investigator. The sentencing for Sheltra is set to occur on Jan. 21.
