Man from El Salvador apprehended by FBI and ICE one year following suspected involvement in fatal accident

A man from El Salvador, identified by the FBI, has been arrested more than a year after he allegedly caused a fatal crash in Indianapolis. Alexis Otoniel Hernandez-Araujo, 26, was apprehended in Indianapolis by a combined team of the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday morning. He is accused of driving under the influence on July 6, 2024, and crashing into a vehicle driven by a pregnant woman on Reisner Street. The crash resulted in the death of his 19-year-old brother and serious injuries to a pregnant woman and two children in the other vehicle. After a struggle with officers at the scene, Hernandez-Araujo was taken to a hospital, but records show he was not formally arrested at that time. Despite being on probation for a prior DUI offense, Hernandez-Araujo allegedly vanished following a requested hold by the state of Indiana and was only apprehended by authorities last week. He faces multiple felony charges for his involvement in the crash, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious injuries and death.
