Man detained in deadly weekend collision in West Valley

A man was taken into custody recently in West Valley City after authorities say he was linked to a deadly collision and then attempted to leave the scene. Osvaldo Chavez Segovia, 20, was placed under arrest and taken to the Salt Lake County Jail for facing charges that include fleeing the scene of an accident causing death, tampering with evidence, providing false details about the accident, driving without a license, and being a minor who consumed alcohol. Shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, police were called to a collision on state Route 111 close to 5250 South. As per a police statement, "Three vehicles were involved, with multiple occupants fleeing the scene." One individual was declared deceased at the scene, while three others were transported to a nearby hospital for medical care. Chavez Segovia was located at the scene by officers, but he claimed he had just been walking in the area and came across the accident. He also allegedly submitted a witness report to law enforcement under a false identity. Following his arrest a few hours later at a residence, it was discovered that he had been drinking alcohol and did not possess a valid driver's license. Police revealed in an affidavit that Mr. Chavez Segovia's misleading information hindered law enforcement efforts during the investigation of a serious crime. No details have been disclosed yet about the person who lost their life in the crash.
