Man detained following deadly collision in St. Petersburg, authorities report

A man in St. Petersburg was taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) after being involved in a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a passenger and injuries to another driver. Brett McClelland, aged 40, was driving an SUV on 38th Avenue North on Wednesday evening when he crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a sedan. Angel Shihate, 89, a passenger in the sedan, tragically passed away following the accident, while the sedan's driver sustained serious injuries. Following treatment for his injuries, McClelland was found to be under the influence and subsequently arrested. Although police have not disclosed the specific substance involved, an investigation is ongoing. McClelland has a history of DUI offenses, with three prior arrests, including two in Pinellas County. His first arrest in Florida occurred in January 2017, leading to probation and a one-year license suspension. In January 2024, he was arrested again for reckless driving after admitting to smoking marijuana earlier that night. McClelland remains detained on charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury.
