Man charged with manslaughter for allegedly riding e-scooter drunk
Authorities in Portland have reported that a Beaverton man was taken into custody last week for his alleged involvement in a fatal collision between an e-scooter and a tractor-trailer in the Lloyd District. Identified as Jayden S. Calkin, the 21-year-old was said to be operating the e-scooter during the incident which resulted in a fatality on August 17. The crash, which happened on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, claimed the life of 24-year-old Gerardo A. Ortiz Henriquez, a Portland resident. Calkin, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time and not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and later turned himself in to authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He now faces charges, including second-degree manslaughter, DUII, and reckless driving. Authorities clarified that the tractor-trailer driver was not at fault and was cooperative during the investigation.
