Man charged with first-degree murder following fatal head-on collision in Volusia

An individual accused of causing a fatal head-on collision resulting in the death of a 71-year-old hospital volunteer is now confronting a first-degree felony murder allegation. The State Attorney’s Office revealed that 40-year-old Stevens Charles was formally charged by a grand jury following the tragic September incident. Authorities stated that Charles, who was wanted for burglary in St. Johns County, tried to evade deputies and crashed into the victim's car on I-95, leading to her untimely death. State Attorney R.J. Larizza expressed deep sorrow over the situation and emphasized that the victim, a dedicated AdventHealth volunteer, did not have a chance to avoid the crash. Larizza lamented the devastating impact of the collision on the victim's small Volkswagen Beetle. Charles, who is currently detained at the Volusia County Branch Jail, is not only facing the murder charge but also several other offenses tied to the incident. His upcoming court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 14.
