Man charged in deadly crash on the Turnpike agrees to go back to jail in Florida

The individual accused of causing a crash on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce last week will soon be transferred back to a Florida jail. Although labeled as an "illegal" by federal and state entities, there are indications that he may have been residing in the country lawfully. During a California court hearing on Tuesday, Harjinder Singh faced three charges related to vehicular homicide after his semi-truck obstructed traffic on the Turnpike. This resulted in a fatal collision with a minivan. Singh, originally from India, requested a translator in court and expressed understanding of his rights, agreeing to return to Florida for trial. Governor Ron DeSantis commented on Singh's demeanor following the incident, noting a lack of reaction that he found troubling. While Singh has been referred to as "illegal" by various officials, reports suggest that he entered the US in 2018 and subsequently applied for asylum. His asylum claim has been in process, allowing him legal stay, as evidenced by his federal work permit approval and renewal.
