Man arrested for allegedly causing fatal crash that killed 5 near Terrell, Texas due to falling asleep, says DPS

A man has been arrested following a tragic accident near Terrell that resulted in the loss of five lives and injuries to others. The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed that 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni is facing several charges, including five counts of manslaughter. The incident occurred on Saturday around 2:40 p.m. on I-20 near Hiram Road when Gonzalez-Companioni reportedly fell asleep while driving his 18-wheeler, leading to a collision with a Ford F-150 carrying five individuals. This crash set off a chain reaction involving other vehicles, resulting in a devastating scene as described by the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the location to provide assistance to the injured and initiate investigations. Tragically, four of the individuals in the Ford F-150 lost their lives at the scene, while the fifth was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Additionally, one person in an SUV involved in the collision also passed away. The names of those affected have not yet been disclosed. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and Gonzalez-Companioni is currently detained in Kaufman County.
