Man arrested after fatal pedestrian crash in southeast Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin Police Department arrested a man who it says is connected to a deadly crash involving a pedestrian in southeast Austin. Just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, Austin Police responded to a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 4900 block of Burleson Road.  Police identified the pedestrian as Juan Mario Martinez-Hernandez. He was pronounced deceased on the scene, according to a press release.  By the time officers arrived at the scene, the driver was gone. However, shortly after police responded to the crash, a 911 caller told police he “had hit a pedestrian on Burleson Road,” the release detailed.  According to the release, officers went to the caller’s apartment and identified the suspect as Angelo Pinheiro, 34. Pinheiro was arrested and transported to the Travis County Jail. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, a Class B Misdemeanor, and Collision Involving death, a second degree felony. Austin police said this incident marks Austin’s 35th deadly crash in 2025, resulting in 39 fatalities.
