Man admits fault, punished for fatal hit-and-run in downtown Kansas City

In downtown Kansas City last winter, a 33-year-old man named Tyler Macias, from Lenexa, Kansas, admitted to causing a fatal hit-and-run crash that led to the death of Michael Babbitt. Macias pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to second-degree involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash. The incident occurred at 12th and Grand Boulevard, where Macias struck Babbitt while he was crossing the street and then drove away. The police later found the abandoned car a mile away and connected it to Macias through the registered owner. In a statement to the police, Macias confessed to hitting Babbitt, feeling scared, and fleeing the scene. Video evidence from city cameras showed the car driving recklessly, ignoring red lights, and colliding with another vehicle prior to the fatal crash. Unfortunately, Babbitt passed away at the hospital due to his injuries. Macias was ultimately sentenced to seven years in prison by the court after pleading guilty to the charges.
