Magna man charged with murder in deadly Murray hit-and-run

A 24-year-old man from Magna, Nathan Michael Portillo, has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in Murray in July. The charges he faces include murder or alternatively automobile homicide, obstruction of justice, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, reckless driving, making a threat of violence, driving on a revoked license, speeding, and making an unsafe lane change. The incident took place on July 31 when Kimberley Jean Jespersen, 53, was struck and killed while crossing a street. Portillo was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck and allegedly hit Jespersen after narrowly avoiding colliding with a gray Chevrolet hatchback. After the collision, Portillo fled the scene. He was identified through surveillance footage showing him driving over the speed limit in the area. The case took a turn when a witness came forward and reported that Portillo and his girlfriend were involved in a concert on the night of the crash, and his girlfriend indicated that he had blacked out and couldn't recall the events. The truck driven by Portillo reportedly matched the description of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and had front-end damage.
