‘Lucky to be alive’: Car driving ‘erratically’ hits semi, lands in ravine in Lake County crash

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) - Witnesses said a car was "driving erratically" in Lake County Monday evening when it crashed into a semi and ended up in a deep ravine. A press release from the Leroy Township Fire Department Tuesday detailed the crash and rescue operation that took place on I-90 near Vrooman Rd. around 5:15 p.m. on Memorial Day. According to the release, witnesses saw the vehicle going west on I-90 when it hit a semi. The impact sent the vehicle off the highway, through a guardrail and a chain link fence and down into a ravine. "The vehicle traveled approximately eighty to 100 feet down the ravine coming to a rest approximately fifteen to twenty feet above Paine creek," the release said. Rescue crews were able to make contact with the female driver around 5:40 p.m. Using a "hauling system," crews were able to bring her to the top of the ravine about an hour later. The woman was then airlifted to Metro hospital in Cleveland. "With the teamwork of everyone we were able to accomplish this technical rescue in a very timely and efficient fashion without causing any additional injuries," the press release stated. According to OHSP Sgt. Aaron Belcher, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. "She's very lucky to be alive," he told Fox 8's Tino Bovenzi. ODOT cameras from the scene showed emergency vehicles and a helicopter on the roadway during the rescue operation. The eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed while crews worked to recover the driver and vehicle from the ravine.
