Lisbon funicular accident claims 17 lives

Two individuals who were amongst the injured passengers and had been receiving treatment in the hospital have sadly passed away, bringing the total number of casualties from the recent accident to 17, as reported by the Civil Protection Service and cited by News.Az. A total of 23 individuals from 10 different nationalities sustained injuries, which include people from countries such as Portugal, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Cape Verde, Canada, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Morocco. The government has declared Thursday as a national day of mourning in response to this tragedy. Although initial investigations suggest a broken cable may have caused the accident, the exact reason remains unclear as investigations are ongoing, as reported by RTP. The incident occurred on Wednesday in Lisbon, where the historic Gloria funicular veered off its path and collided with a building on Rua da Gloria. The accident happened just after 6 pm local time (1600GMT) as the funicular was descending from the Sao Pedro de Alcantara viewpoint towards Restauradores.
