Lawsuit filed by family of Washington plane crash victim against FAA, Army, and American Airlines
The family of one of the individuals who tragically lost their life in the recent collision between an airplane and an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C. has initiated legal action against the government and the airlines involved. The lawsuit accuses them of not heeding the numerous warning signs after over 30 near-miss incidents in the area. More families are anticipated to join this initial legal action, which aims to hold the Federal Aviation Administration, the Army, American Airlines, and its regional partner, PSA Airlines, accountable for the deadliest U.S. plane crash since 2001. The lawsuit alleges that these entities neglected their responsibilities to the public. While the FAA did not respond immediately, the airlines and Army expressed their focus on supporting the affected families and ensuring flight safety. The National Transportation Safety Board has identified various factors likely contributing to the crash; its final report is expected next year. The lawsuit asserts that the airlines failed in their obligation to passenger safety by not adequately addressing the risks of close interactions between helicopters and commercial aircraft around Reagan airport. The lawsuit further points out that the PSA pilots should have reacted sooner to the warning alerts they received before the collision occurred. A figure skating tribute event was held to raise funds for the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.
