Lawmakers propose stricter DWI laws as drunk driver in fatal Park Tavern crash faces new charges.
A man accused of causing a fatal crash due to drunk driving at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park last September is now facing new charges. Prosecutors have brought additional charges against Steven Bailey to address three more individuals who were injured in the accident, bringing the total number of injured victims to 12, some of whom sustained life-changing injuries. Bailey, accused of driving with a significantly high blood alcohol content, had five prior DWI convictions in Minnesota. A memorial of trees outside Park Tavern commemorates the lives lost in the tragic incident. Legislation has been introduced by lawmakers to strengthen Minnesota's DWI laws, particularly focusing on the use of ignition interlock devices that can prevent a car from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver's breath. The new bill, which has bipartisan support, proposes extending the interlock device requirement to 10 years for individuals with three or more DWI convictions in their lifetime, aiming to reduce repeat offenses. Rep. Larry Kraft emphasized the importance of preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future. The bill has passed the Minnesota House and is now awaiting consideration by the state Senate. The trial of Bailey is scheduled for May 12.
