Las Vegas jury awards $15M in fatal crash involving ex-UNLV baseball recruit
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A jury awarded $15 million to the family of a man killed in a crash involving former UNLV basketball recruit Zaon Collins, attorneys said Tuesday. Eric Echevarria, 52, was killed in the crash on Dec. 30, 2020. Las Vegas Metropolitan police documents said Collins was driving nearly 90 mph in a 35-mph zone near Fort Apache and Blue Diamond roads when he hit Echevarria’s car. In 2023, Collins accepted a plea deal where he agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge of reckless driving resulting in death and a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter. He initially faced a DUI charge. Collins served less than 90 days in jail. A grand jury declined to indict him on a DUI charge. The Echevarria family filed its lawsuit in 2021. The jury returned its verdict Tuesday afternoon after several days of testimony.
