Lack of bollards leads to second crash at St. David’s hospital in Austin following previous fatal incident.
Two months following a fatal collision at St. David's North in February of the previous year, a separate incident occurred at the hospital system's south location. An investigation carried out by KXAN brought to light this previously unreported crash, adding to a series of at least five recent incidents, some of them lethal, at medical facilities managed by HCA Healthcare, the profit-making partner of St. David's HealthCare. Through the evaluation of various sources, including surveillance video, images, emails, and official records such as 911 calls and crash reports, KXAN sought to delve into the details of the accident that transpired on April 10, 2024, at St. David's South Austin Medical Center. Visual evidence showed a nursing transit van positioned near the hospital's northern entrance, waiting to drop off a patient when, as investigators indicated, the driver abruptly accelerated, resulting in a collision with another vehicle and then climbing over a curb onto a landscaped area. Thankfully, no patients, visitors, staff, or physicians inside the building were harmed. Following the incident, calls were made for the installation of bollards to enhance safety measures in potential impact zones, mirroring safety protocols seen at St. David's North. The hospital has pledged to fund the installation of bollards at strategic locations to prevent similar incidents and protect the hospital's occupants.
