Kassandra and 7 others charged in deadly amusement park accident
The mayor of Kassandra, a town on the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece, is one of eight individuals accused in connection with a tragic incident at an amusement park last summer. Anastasia Halkia is facing charges of breaching her duties, brought by the Polygyros Court of First Instance prosecutor, after a fatal accident at a local amusement park resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man in August. Additionally, six others are facing lesser charges related to the incident. This group includes two deputy mayors responsible for issuing permits to the park, two municipal employees (one being a department head), and two engineers considered to be involved in some way. The park's owner, currently in custody awaiting trial, is charged with encouraging the negligence of duties. The accusations come after an independent investigation initiated by the Polygyros prosecutor. Previously, four individuals, including the park owner, his wife, the ride operator, and an engineer who approved the permits, were charged with more serious offenses. While the park owner remains in custody, the other three were released with conditions. Depending on their roles, these individuals face multiple charges such as manslaughter, complicity, and attempted criminal actions.
