Kansas students killed in crash after prom

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) - The two teenagers who were killed in a head-on crash in Overland Park over the weekend were students heading home from prom, according to a spokesperson with the Shawnee Mission School District. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that on Saturday, at about 11:20 p.m., 17-year-old Jose Placensia Castaneda and 18-year-old Itzel Guerra were driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla southbound on Metcalf Avenue, between West 58th Street and Johnson Drive, when it crossed the center median into oncoming traffic. As Placensia Castaneda drove in the opposite lanes, two women -- a 44-year-old driver and a 41-year-old passenger-- were heading northbound on Metcalf Avenue in a 2015 Kia Optima when they were hit head-on. Both teens were killed in the crash, and the 44-year-old driver of the Kia was seriously injured. The passenger in the Kia had minor injuries. KHP has not released the cause of the crash. Shawnee Mission South High School has not put out a formal statement about the death of the two teens.
